2009 Youth Mission Trip to Mississippi
August 9th - 15th
The members of the UMYF & adult volunteers conducted a week long mission trip in Pearlington, Mississippi which is still in the process of rebuilding after being destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Pearlington was directly hit by Katrina with the eye of the storm passing over the town. The greatest damage was done by the storm surge waters which reached a depth of 30 feet. Eighty percent (80%) of the buildings in Pearlington were washed completely away by the 30 foot wall of water. The storm surge was so powerful that it washed away many of the the paved roads and even destroyed the buried water and sewer lines. The remaining buildings were severely damaged by the wind and flood waters. (See the "Photo Gallery" link on the left to see a few pictures from the trip.)
